1 〔固くする〕 harden; make sth hard; solidify; dry (out); dry sth hard; 〔突き固める〕 tamp (down); ram (down); beat sth firm; 〔締める〕 tighten; 〔凝結させる〕 freeze; congeal; coagulate; curdle; 【化】 (流動体を) fix.

●雪を固めて雪だるまを作る pack snow together and make a snowman

・滑降コースの雪を固める press [tamp] down the snow on a piste

・こぶしを固める clench [double] one's fist(s).

●川岸をコンクリートで固めた. They covered the riverbank with cement. | They concreted the bank of the river.

・彼はうそで固めた調査報告を提出した. He presented a report that was a pack [tissue] of lies.

・彼は委員会のメンバーを自分の取り巻きで固めた. He filled [packed] the committee with his own hangers-on.

2 〔集める〕 collect; bring together; assemble.

●全員の手荷物を固めておきなさい. Put everybody's bags (together) in one place.

3 〔確かなものにする〕 (強化する) strengthen; (堅固にする) solidify; consolidate; make sth secure.

・後半は彼を入れて守りを固める作戦にでた. In the second half they brought him on to strengthen the defense.

・同業各社は結束を固めてその法案に抗議した. All the companies in the same industry united [combined forces] to oppose the bill.

・組織票を固めるだけでは今度の選挙には勝てない. Just getting the whole of the block vote won't be enough for victory in this election.

4 〔防御する〕 defend; fortify; 〔警備する〕 guard 《a castle gate》.

●国境を固める garrison [fortify] a frontier.

●首相官邸は警官によって固められていた. The prime minister's residence was guarded [protected] by police.

・だれも中に入れないように, 3, 4 人の男が集会所の入り口を固めていた. Three or four men were guarding the entrance to the meeting place to prevent anyone from going in.

5 〔(身を)落ち着ける〕

●身を固める settle down; 〔結婚して〕 (get married and) settle down; 〔定職について〕 settle down (in a job); settle in [into 《a job》].

6 〔しっかり身支度する〕

●よろいに身を固める clad oneself in armor (from head to toe).

●彼はダークスーツに身を固めてやってきた. He came clad in [wearing] a dark suit.
